Victor Shrem

This painting depicts the breastplate (Hoshen) worn by the High Priest in the Tabernacle during Israel’s forty years of wandering in the desert and later, in the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. Each of the twelve precious stones represents one of the Twelve Tribes of Israel. The Hebrew initial of each tribe appears below its respective stone. Signed by the artist. 20" x 27"

Victor Shrem is a scion of a family that came to this country in the 16th Century, following the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492. Victor studied ceramics in Germany and, in 1984, opened his own studio in the Old City of Jerusalem. Today, Victor creates paintings using watercolor, oil and collage. Victor’s paintings are inspired by Israeli folklore, Israeli landscapes, (particularly the City of Jerusalem) and Judaic themes.
