The tales and aphorisms retold by Buber in The Ten Rungs are drawn from Hasidic lore, where the various ways in which individuals learn to perfect themselves are the “rungs” on the ladder leading a higher realm. Fanciful and sober by turn, these interpretations never swerve from their basic purpose: to arouse an awareness of the individual’s condition and show the way to a life of truth and goodness. The Way of Man is a masterwork of economy in which Buber relates and interprets six traditional Hasidic stories, that offer guidance and wisdom in any age. “There is something,” he suggests, “that can only be found in one place. It is a great treasure, which may be called the fulfillment of existence.
